Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has issued a strong warning to Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited (now Paradeep Phospates Limited) regarding the transportation of ammonia, threatening to mobilize the public and halt all transportation activities if safety concerns are not addressed. This comes after an ammonia leakage incident was reported at Berth No. 8 in the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) on Tuesday morning.
Amonkar, who visited the site to assess the situation, expressed deep concern about the potential danger posed by ammonia to the residents of Mormugao. He highlighted the issue of ammonia storage tanks located in close proximity to densely populated areas, raising alarm over the safety risks involved.
“The local residents informed me about the leakage incident during the unloading of Ammonia cargo at the port. Ammonia is a hazardous substance, and I have consistently called for mock drills to be conducted to ensure safety measures and disaster preparedness. Despite raising this concern in the assembly, we are unaware if these mock drills have been carried out. This lack of information is unacceptable. Mock drills should involve public participation to ensure awareness of necessary steps to be taken during emergencies. The public is currently unaware of any mock drills since the tanks are situated within the port, and it is crucial that these ammonia storage tanks be relocated immediately,” said Amonkar.
He further stressed that while the ammonia leakage from the ship had been brought under control without major casualties, the responsibility for any potential emergency situations remains unclear. Amonkar urged the Mormugao Port Authority to refrain from allowing such dangerous cargo into the port, as it jeopardizes the lives of residents. He also criticized the illegal transportation of ammonia, stating that safety protocols were not being followed during transportation on roads. Amonkar demanded that every ammonia tanker be accompanied by a fire brigade and an escort to address emergency situations, which is currently lacking.
“We will be compelled to take to the streets with the people if Zuari Agro Chemicals continues to disregard safety and takes the public for granted. I am not against any business, but if any company endangers people’s lives by taking them for granted, I may be forced to take severe measures,” warned Amonkar.
The issue raised by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar underscores the urgent need for ensuring the safe transportation and storage of ammonia, as well as the importance of conducting mock drills to prepare for any potential emergencies. The concerns expressed highlight the importance of public safety and the responsibility of relevant authorities to address these issues promptly and effectively.
