Panaji, Jul 15 – The Goa assembly experienced two adjournments on Monday after BJP MLA Daji Krishna Salkar moved a breach of privilege motion against Congress legislator Altone D’Costa, following D’Costa’s remarks about Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar.
The assembly session began with a commotion on the floor before the Question Hour, marking the start of the monsoon session. D’Costa had previously told reporters that the Speaker had dismissed his resolution seeking political reservation for the Scheduled Tribes community in the assembly.
On Monday, Salkar’s motion incited a heated debate. Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao questioned the validity of the breach of privilege claim, asking, “Nothing stops us from moving a resolution. How is it a breach of privilege?”
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant argued that D’Costa’s statement to the media was disrespectful to the Speaker and demanded an apology. As tensions rose, Speaker Tawadkar initially adjourned the House for half an hour. Upon resumption, the ruling benches insisted on their demand for the motion, leading to a second half-hour adjournment.
Addressing reporters, Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai suggested that the ruling party’s disruption was a calculated move to bypass the Question Hour. Sardesai, along with Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira, had posed a question on the National Education Policy (NEP) that he claimed would have exposed shortcomings of the state government.
“The government tried to avoid the Question Hour by disrupting the House,” Sardesai alleged.
