In a significant move, the upper chamber of Tajikistan’s Parliament has approved a bill prohibiting children from celebrating Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) and Eid al-Fitr. The legislation also includes a ban on wearing the hijab in schools, offices, and public spaces.
Both chambers of Parliament have endorsed these measures, citing concerns over the influence of Islamic extremism. The new law states, “Hijab and other traditional Islamic clothing have recently started appearing in Tajikistan from the Middle East, and these items are associated with Islamic extremists.”
This development marks a notable shift in the country’s approach to religious practices and attire, aiming to curb the influence of foreign religious customs perceived as extremist.
