Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, unveiled a groundbreaking biodiversity atlas of Mayem village in North Goa, marking it as a pioneering initiative in India. With a historical narrative tracing back to the 12th century, the atlas was revealed during a ceremony held at the Mahamaya Devalaya Mandap within Mayem village, situated in the Bicholim taluka.
Addressing the gathering, Sawant emphasized the significance of this atlas, heralding it as India’s inaugural village atlas. He highlighted its value in showcasing the socio-cultural evolution of Mayem village over centuries.
Sawant’s address also carried a call to action, urging the younger generation to make a solemn commitment to safeguard the village’s biodiversity. He pointed out that historically, the village residents were custodians of their natural surroundings until recent decades. Expressing concern about the decline in this practice, Sawant urged the youth to step forward and play an active role in conserving the village’s unique biodiversity.
The Chief Minister drew attention to the ongoing degradation of biodiversity, underlining that the duty to protect it falls on the shoulders of every individual. In this collective effort, he emphasized that the responsibility extended to all members of society.
The release of the village atlas and Sawant’s impassioned plea to protect biodiversity underscored the importance of preserving natural heritage for present and future generations. (End)
